Are fees for your TFSA tax deductible?

Featured writing by Allan Norman · M.Sc. · CFP · CIM

The Short Version

A TFSA is built to grow and come out tax-free, so it's worth knowing whether the fees attached to it earn you anything back at tax time. The short answer here is no: advisory fees and the HST on them aren't deductible when they relate to a tax-free account. What this piece adds is the more useful question of where the money to cover those costs should come from. Paying TFSA fees out of a non-registered account can keep the tax-free balance intact to keep compounding, and the fees on that taxable side may be deductible in their own right. Allan is candid that the difference is modest next to the bigger levers in a plan, but it's a tidy bit of housekeeping. It's relevant to anyone holding a fee-based TFSA who wants to handle the charges sensibly.
